Clijsters wins Brisbane title

Saving two match points along the way, Kim Clijsters won the Brisbane International today, defeating countrywoman and long-time rival Justine Henin 6-3, 4-6, 7-6. It was a very good way for the 2009 U.S. Open champion to start her 2010 season, and both players look to be in good form for the Australian Open.

Henin has withdrawn from competition in Sydney, by the way, citing concern about a strained upper left leg that she does not want to aggravate right before she goes to Melbourne.

In doubles, Andrea Hlavackova and Lucie Hradecka won the Brisbane title by defeating Melinda Czink and Arantxa Parra Santonja 2-6, 7-6, 10-4.

and again to Pam Shriver : I'm sure the Aussies know where Belgium is located... especially after Kim, Justine and Yanina. By the way, Kim decided to donate her price money to the children's hospital in Brisbane...very classy of her.

I read that. She visited the hospital during her stay in Brisbane, I think.

Yes Kim did visit the hospital pre-tournament. I think it was great to have a wonderful match to start off the year in women's tennis. This is what the tour needs. Henin did well to even make a final after 18 months. And to put up such a fight producing great tennis. Both of them. Shows Clijsters wasn't a fluke last summer. I am sorry they won't be in Sydney to battle it with the top 10 but it is good that they save their stuff for the AO.
