After declaring she would risk her health to help Serbia win the Hopman Cup, Jelena Jankovic experienced a moment of sanity and withdrew from her match against Serena Williams. Her compatriot, Novak Djokovic, went on to defeat U.S. team member Mardy Fish, but Jankovic and Djokovic lost to Williams and Fish in the mixed doubles event, 7-6, 6-2.
An exhausted Djokovic told Jankovic he was relying on her for success in the mixed doubles event. Maybe he should have thought that through a bit more. At any rate, the U.S. has won the Hopman Cup.
