Despite a mutual struggle to lose, Kuznetsova emerges as semifinal winner

It looked for all the world that Nicole Vaidisova and Svetlana Kuznetsova were each doing everything possible to lose the Sydney semifinal match, but, of course, someone had to win the thing, and the victory went to Kuznetsova, 7-5, 7-6. It was an ugly, boring match, and I expect a boring final.

Oh my, were you ever wrong about the boring final! Honestly, I didn't know Sveta could play so well, and I've seen a bunch of her matches. Nothing like this though. Of course, it speaks volumes for Queen Justine that she somehow won anyway! If you didn't watch this one until 2am PST this morning, be sure to catch the replay on the Tennis Channel :>

I couldn't stay up to watch, but now that you've told me this, I'll make a point of watching the replay.

That's good news, too, because Kuznetsova has so much talent and is such a great athlete, but she can be such a drag in important matches.

I watched it, Jen, and you're right--Sveta played some tennis!

So glad you caught the action, Diane. That was a gripping struggle at nearly the level of the Henin-Sharapova YEC match. I'm glad for Sveta and just amazed by Justine. She beats players like Venus, Golovin, Maria, AnaIvo and Kuznetsova -- when they are playing nearly out of their minds! And her ability to rally mentally after falling behind 0-3 in the third, for instance, leaves me speechless with admiration. What a warrior!
