Kerber gets 39th match win of the season

Angelique Kerber, seeded 5th in Eastbourne, defeated former Eastbourne champion Ekaterina Makarova 6-2, 6-4 today in the quarterfinals. This victory marked the German player's 39th match win of the 2012 season; Victoria Azarenka and Agnieszka Radwanska each have 38 wins.

Kerber's opponent in the semifinals will be Klara Zakopalova, who defeated Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova 6-3, 7-5, after being down 2-5 in the second set.

4th seed Marion Bartoli defeated 7th seed Lucie Safarova in straight sets, and Tamira Paszek defeated Tsvetana Pironkova--who sustained a lower back injury during the match--6-0, 6-4. Hopefully, Pironkova will be okay for Wimbledon, since that is the tournament where she shines.

At the UNICEF Open, 8th seed Nadia Petrova defeated 3rd seed Dominika Cibulkova, qualifier Urszula Radwanska defeated Sofia Arvidsson, and Kim Clijsters defeated Francesca Schiavone.

Ursula Radwanska seems to be playing well lately.

I hope Kerber doesn't burn herself out now that she is in the top 10. A. Radwanska is complaining about being tired with all her matches. Radwanska was complaining about a back problem before the clay season but continued to play even at Brussels. It seems like these women are just trying to get points not win tournaments that would give them a bunch of points all at once instead of getting points here and there making second rounds. Kerber just made the top 10 recently so I understand that her schedule may be fixed. Hopefully if she remains there she will play what the tour asks of top ten players next year.

Kerber is really fit, but everyone has a limit. I hope she knows what hers is.

Actually, these stats are not very fair because all Fed Cup matches are not counted: Angelique Kerber won two matches in Fed Cup (World Group) and they are included by the WTA in her 39 wins of the season, when Agnieszka Radwanska won 4 matches (Europe/Africa Zone) which are not counted as victories by the WTA.

As a matter of fact, Radwanska has 42 wins this season and should remain the player with the largest amount of victories. This difference of treatment regarding these Fed Cup matches is a mystery for me...

I didn't catch that, Jerem, but Im really glad that you did. Have you contacted the WTA about it?
