Zvonareva wins in Guangzhou

Vera Zvonareva has won the Guangzhou International Women's Open, defeating Peng Shuai, 6-7, 6-0, 6-2.

As I have written before, I do not think a player of Zvonareva's caliber (I have my doubts about Zheng Jie, too) should be permitted to play in a small tournament like Guangzhou. However, there are no such restrictions, and Zvonreva now has another title.

First of all, congratulations to vera, good tournament for her!

But I agree in a sense about allowing players ranked so highly play lower tournaments. I think perhaps the rule should be that if there are no other tournaments on that week, only a tier III or IV then it should be allowed...But in a week where a tier I or II are on as well, then there is more of a problem. Honestly, I think she should have want to played tokyo, to test herself against the worlds best.

I believe Guangzhou is Jie Zheng's home province so it would make sense for her to play there.

Yes, I thought I would cut some slack for Zheng because of where she lives--plus, her ranking isn't extremely high. But I still don't like the lack of restriction on top players who pillage small tournaments.

Nah, Zheng's home province is Sichuan, not Guangzhou. I think she wanted to play there because both Na Li and Yan Zi have won titles there, and she wanted to win one too.
