Passing shots

The WTA has introduced a new website feature, "Slava's Shots." The monthly gallery will feature photography by Yaroslava Shvedova.

Kim Clijsters' Brisbane injury has been diagnosed as a thigh muscle spasm, and she should be fine for the Australian Open.

The Radwanska sisters will oppose each other in the first round in Sydney. Also featured in the first round are Vera Zvonareva vs. Svetlana Kuznetsova, Sam Stosur vs. Francesca Schiavone, and Alexandra Dulgheru vs. Sofia Arvidsson (Arvidsson beat Dulgheru in the final round of qualifying). Whoever wins the last one plays Petra Kvitova in the second round.

Jelena Jankovic has a new sponsorship with Fila. For the past several years, she has worn Anta tennis outfits.

Scott Draper says there are similarities between Ashleigh Barty and Hana Mandlikova. We can only hope. Meanwhile, the great Mandlikova appears as number 1 on this list of ten WTA players who achieved very big things, but were never ranked number 1.

Best Qualifier/Lucky Loser "deja vu" moment ever: Canberra in 2005. Ivanovic (then ranked #100) defeats Czink in the final round of qualifying. Czink gets into the draw as a Lucky Loser, then meets Ivanovic again... IN THE FINAL. The Serb, just 17 at the time, wins again to claim her first-ever title.

I'd forgotten completely about that! That really was a noteworthy moment. It seems so long ago, doesn't it?
