Women's doubles final to be concluded tomorrow

Vania King and Yaroslava Shvedova were serving at 2-6, 6-4, 4-5, 0-15 when rain fell and caused a delay in their U.S. Open championship match. The match was expected to resume within a hour or so, but the rain continued, so King and Shvedova, and their opponents, Liezel Huber and Nadia Petrova, will conclude their match tomorrow.

It was a fun match to watch. I'm also rooting for King/Shvedova. Goodness, serving 0-15, needing to hold serve to stay in it? Yikes! Go, Vanya!

And on the topic of the talking heads, I was pleasantly impressed with Pam Shriver in the booth. You've said, Diane, that you like her, but for a number of reasons she's always rubbed me the wrong way. Another but! I can change my mind, and I thought I'd try to keep it open, and... I'm glad I did. Imho, she's much better in the booth than courtside. Or in the crowd.

I wish ESPN (and CBS?) would stop cutting into the next service game, however, with commercials, and other junk. We come back and it's 15-30 or something. I keep imagining that they don't do this for men's matches; I know they do it routinely for women's matches. Perhaps I'm paranoid, don't know.

Anyway, go, King/Shvedova!

The thing about Shriver is that--when she screws up--she screws up big-time. The Wickmayer incident, the taunting (Cliffie joined in for it) of a player who simply asked to have her name pronounced correctly, and perhaps worst of all--her interference (leaving the booth to "inform" the umpire that a player wasn't following the rules--duh) in a major final--all still make me cringe.

But since her divorce and its accompanying horrors, I've noticed that she has become more thoughtful in her speaking, and definitely more feminist, which is so needed. She makes me laugh. And she is really good when she talks about tennis.

I'm not familiar with any of the incidents you mention, and I'm kind of glad I'm not lol. I remember her courtside snarking about James Blake and he heard her and directed his frustration at her, and just other times of her being snarky and sarcastic about things. Which added to the general ESPN2 snarkfest tone re: the women's game, in general.

It's interesting - I have noticed that she's been more of a vocal feminist over the past year, and wasn't sure why. I did not know she divorced. Well, bless her heart, if all of that made her more thoughtful we get to reap the benefits.

One of my frustrations with the talking heads is that on ESPN2 they so rarely talk about the match when it's women playing -- they chat amongst themselves, they interview more important male sports celebrities in the crowd, or singers, etc., and occasionally Cliffie will give the score, or MJ will make a comment which so often leads to talking about the Williams's, or Sharipova, none of whom are actually on the court... it's awful.

The women's doubles match - Shriver was analyzing what was happening, all the time, with care and a completely even-handed approach. It was shockingly wonderful. And interesting. And added to my enjoyment of an already enjoyable match.

I don't know his name (can anyone help with that?), but my favorite commentator is probably the man we usually hear on Tennis TV. He is respectful, informative, very funny, and--perhaps most important--he is alone. The endless babble of multiple commentators drives me crazy.

I don't know who you mean, since I usually hear the men with one other person. Ted Robinson is fantastic, imho, very respectful and just knowledgeable enough to know what to ask the tennis player commentator. And I think he's the only one who is solely on Tennis Channel and not also on ESPN or CBS. (He used to cover the US OPen early rounds on USA network with JMac and Tracey Austin).

Ian Eagle, I think that's his name, is also on TC. And the other man, with blondish reddish hair whose name always escapes me, but he's often on the CBS coverage as well, doing host-y things (not in the booth).

But the matches I see have either Corrina Moriaru, Lindsey Davenport, or Martina in the booth with any one of the men, above. There's Gimelstob, but I don't think you mean him (!).

Or did you NOT mean Tennis Channel?

Sorry!

No--Tennis TV. The British man.

Diane it could be one of 3 men: Doug Adler, Jason Goodall or Robbie Koenig. I am thinking it may very well be Jason Goodall as he is quite knowledgeable about tennis. I recall Wimbledon 2008 during a match between Serena Williams and Agnieska Radwanska, during a changeover he gave us a slow motion frame by frame replay of Serena's movement on grass. It was a clinical display of the footwork of Serena.

Her footwork was just amazing, especially since she was on the backfoot most of the time during that rally and her point of contact with the ball, the fact she kept her head down during every single one of her shots and that her racquet seemed to become an extension of herself. She used the racquet to move herself into position and never lost focus once. It was amazing.

It certainly isn't Doug Adler; I have trouble listening to him. And it isnt Robbie Koening, I'm quite sure. It's occurred to me that it might Jason Goodall I'm hearing, but I'm not sure. I hope to find out eventually. Whoever it is, he's really good, and so pleasant to hear.
