Four-time champion Justine Henin overcame Tsvetana Pironkova in straight sets, and 12th seed and Strasbourg champion Maria Sharapova also won in straight sets. Lucky loser Bethanie Mattek-Sands became a first round winner today when she defeated friend and countrywoman Vania King 6-2, 6-2.
Clay court specialist Carla Suarez Navarro also made a first round exit, losing to Olga Govortsova.
In doubles, all of the seeded teams won today.
