Dementieva upset by Zheng in Montreal

Zheng Jie defeated 4th seed Elena Dementieva 7-6, 6-4 today in the third round of the Rogers Cup. Zheng made it all the way to the semifinals of this year's Australian Open. She is the only unseeded player remaining in Montreal.

Also going out in the third round was 7th seed Agnieszka Radwanska, who was defeated 6-4, 1-6, 6-3 by 11th seed Svetlana Kuznetsova, who recently won the title in San Diego.

Iveta Benesova's run was ended abruptly by 17th seed Marion Bartoli; Benesova won one game. 10th seed Victoria Azarenka defeated 9th seed Li Na, and 2nd seed Caroline Wozniacki wore down 15th seed Flavia Pennetta by engaging her in a series of very long rallies. Pennetta seemed more mentally tired than anything; Wozniacki really likes these long rallies, and appears to have almost endless mental and physical energy.

Here is the quarterfinal draw:

Marion Bartoli (17) vs. Victoria Azarenka (10)
Kim Clijsters (5) vs. Vera Zvonareva (8)
Svetlana Kuznetsova (11) vs. Zheng Jie
Francesca Schiavone (6) vs. Caroline Wozniacki (2)

Zheng lost in the third round of last year's U.S. Open. She made it all the way to the semifinal of this year's Australian Open though.

Well, it seems that Dementieva is not doing well since her injury at RG. She is one who is used to playing a lot and being sidelined that long probably has hurt her rhythm. She has stayed healthy for so long-like Federer, that it is difficult to see her in this predicament. I always thought that she was one of the most athletic people on the tour but who knows if this injury is lingering.

I watched the match last night with Flavia/Wozniacki and all I have to say is this, against any other player, that is, those players in the top 10 who have a big serve and kill shots, Wozniacki will be toast. Keeping the ball in play for as long as you can against the better players will not win you majors or premier titles.

Last night she finished the match with 21 winners. 21 winners in a 3 set match. That is just totally unacceptable. Flavia as well does not seem to have a put away shot.

A thought did cross my mind. How come Flavia has such a good h2h against Venus and against Wozniacki she has never beaten her. She is now 4-0 against Wozniacki? I guess she got someone who can out run her and keep the ball in play longer until she is tired physically and mentally.

She has shorter points with Venus, yes. Wozniacki just goes and goes and goes. I thought Pennetta's fatigue was more mental than anything.

This is not to take anything away from Pennetta's skills in long raliies. She just doesn't seem to do well in them if she has do them over and over and over. This is true of a lot of players, and it is the key to much of Wozniacki's success. Once she is in a point, she is quite tough about staying in it.

Serena has withdrawn from the 2010 US Open.

A collective sigh of relief was breathed by 127 women. LOL

Just a day or so ago, she said she would be there. Odd.
