Passing shots

Venus and Serena Williams have both withdrawn from the French Open. This is not unexpected, given the health problems they have experienced in the past several months.

Kim Clijsters has not yet decided whether to play in the French Open, but her participation is looking more likely than some thought.

The latest Backspin Time Capsule is all about Monica Seles. It brings back a lot of memories.

Mary Carillo will join the broadcast team for Tennis Channel for both the French Open and the U.S. Open. In Paris, Carillo will host Tennis Channel's live network desk, do interviews, provide analysis, and do some selected play-by-play commentating.

Here is a brief preview of Adidas fashion for the French Open.

I heard Mary Carillo's comments via telephone (I think she's vacationing on Mars, considering the audio quality) on Tennis Channel today. Nice to have her back (and at the US Open on TC, too).

Yeah, it looks like it might not happen now, unless Clijsters plays in Brussels and hurts herself again, but if KC doesn't play in Paris it'll be the first slam since they all made their pro debuts that none of the foursome of Venus, Serena, Clijsters and Henin will be playing. At least one has played at every slam since Venus debuted at Roland Garros in '97.

That's quite a stat.

My understanding is that KC is feeling pretty good, but is waiting a bit before she makes a final decision (or she could hurt herself in Brussels--I hope not).
