Radwanska wins Rogers Cup

Isn't it just like Aga Radwanska to sneak a big win in just when fans are talking about her 2014 slump? That sneak attack is so very Radwanskian, to borrow a term from WTA Backspin. In today's Rogers Cup final, the world number 5 defeated Venus Williams 6-4, 6-2 to win her 14th title. It was a great week for both players, with Venus beating Serena for the first time in five years, and with the Polish star taking out Sabine Lisicki, Victoria Azarenka and Ekaterina Makarova.

It wasn't such a great week for the "all Bouchard all the time" trend network. The Canadian player went out in the second round with a bagel sandwich delivered to her by Shelby Rogers. That seems like a long time ago, doesn't it? Rogers herself would win only one game in the next round, when she became the victim of Caroline Wozniacki.

Top seeds Sara Errani and Roberta Vinci. who are so "back," won the doubles title, defeating 4th seeds Cara Black and Sania Mirza, 7-6, 6-3 in today's final.

And now on to Cincinnati, where Serena Williams is the top seed. Williams has a bye in the first round, and will play--well, will maybe play--Sam Stosur in the second round. Stosur plays a qualifier in the first round, and we all know how that might turn out. Andrea Petkovic and Sloane Stephens play each other in the opening round, as do Alize Cornet and Madison Keys. Another first round match to keep an eye on--Lucie Safarova vs. Montreal finalist Venus Williams.

Serena gets an easy draw... a pile of qualifiers there.

She really did do well, draw-wise. She seems to be working her way nicely toward Flushing Meadows. The loss to Venus was a loss, yes, but it was a "good" loss. Great match for both of them.

Isn't the #1 seed supposed to get a good draw?

Sabey, Yes. But it is a very very good draw and that is good for anyone who gets that. The down side is that maybe it is better before a major to have tough matches.

WTA website complain 8/14/14:
"Kuznetsova stuns Bouchard"

Really?!? 2-time GS Winner Kuznetsova beating Bouchard is "stunning".

The headline certainly stunned me.

Why was Serena's draw easy? This week or last week? I didn't think she faced any qualifiers... Am I missing something?

I guess anyone beating Bouchard is now a "stun." what was stunning was how they played--it wasn't pretty.

Eric, during the Montreal Shelby Rogers match, while Bouchard was being bageled, Brett Haber was busy saying Bouchard is such a hot player now, and you can see why! I mean, she was in the middle of getting her ass kicked, and he was saying this. He then realized what he'd done and only made it worse by saying some really lame things to try to justify his original comment.

When I first glanced at Serena's draw, I failed to see JJ's name as a looming opponent. Of course, in the last year or so, JJ has let Serena play with her head, but if she could get past that, she would still be one of the tougher players for Serena to face on a hard court or clay court.

So...Ivanovic/Svitolina gets the center court nod over Sharapova/Halep and Aga/Woz?

Cincy Tennis, I see you.

Go figure. On paper, that's in AnaIvo's facor, but it. ay not be a reality.
