Top qualifying seed Kateryna Bondarenko got through the first round of qualifying for the China Open, defeating Virginia Ruano Pascual in straight sets, 2nd seed Shahar Peer defeated Chang Kai-Chen, and 3rd seed Melina Czink defeated Natalie Grandin, but others weren't so lucky.
4th seed Melanie Oudin was upset by Alexa Glatch, 8th seed Sania Mirza was upset by Ji Chun-Mei, and 10th seed Jill Craybas was upset by Chanelle Scheepers. 11th seed Victoriya Kutuzova was defeated by Tatiana Poutchek, Angela Haynes beat 15th seed Anastasia Rodionova, and Michelle Larcher de Brito was taken out by Sun Shengnan.
Nuria Llagostera Vives moved to the second round when her opponent, number 6 seed Andrea Petkovic, had to retire.
Also out are Katarina Srebotnik, who was defeated in straight sets by 12th seed Vania King.
