Williams sisters win Stanford doubles title

Venus and Serena Williams won the Stanford doubles championship today, defeating unseeded Chan Yung-Jan and Monica Niculescu 6-4, 6-1. The Williams team was seeded number 2.

Black & Huber upset in Stanford

Top seeds Cara Black and Liezel Huber, the number 1 doubles team in the world, were upset in the Stanford quarterfinals last night by Chan Yung-Jan and Monica Niculescu. Chan and Niculescu will play Venus and Serena Williams in the final. The Williams sisters defeated Bethanie Mattek-Sands and Nadia Petrova, the team who took them out of the French Open.

Szavay wins Budapest championship

Playing in front of her home crowd, Agnes Szavay upset top seed Patty Schnyder today in the GDF SUEZ Grand Prix in Budapest. Szavay defeated Schnyder 2-6, 6-4, 6-2.

Alisa Kleybanova and Monica Niculescu won the doubles title, defeating Alona and Kateryna Bondarenko 6-4, 7-6, in a match that included eleven breaks of serve.

Top seeds upset in first round of Ordina Open

Anna-Lena Groenefeld and Monica Niculescu were upset in the first round of the Ordina Open today by Sorana Cirstea and Dinara Safina. Cirstea and Safina won the match 6-2, 6-2.

Black and Huber out of Indian Wells

At the beginning of play in Indian Wells, the tour promoted Cara Black and Liezel Huber as "the ones to beat." Alisa Kleybanova and Monica Niculescu took that seriously, defeating the top seeds 7-5, 7-6 yesterday in the second round.

Also of interest was the defeat of the unseeded, but formerly highly ranked, team of Yan Zi and Zheng Jie. The winners of their second match were 7th seeds Maria Kirilenko and Flavia Pennetta (6-7, 6-4, 10-6).

Peschke and Stubbs upset in Moscow

The team of Monica Niculescu and Yaroslava Shvedova took out the Kremlin Cup's number 2 seeds today. Niculescu and Shvedova defeated Kveta Peschke and Rennae Stubbs, 4-6, 6-0, 10-7.

For those who haven't heard, Shvedova is no longer Russian. She has changed her nationality and now plays for Kazakhstan.
