Kerber makes her final tourament a good one

Today, at the Olympic Games, 2016 silver medal winner Angelique Kerber fought her way into the 2024 Olympic Games round of 16 by defeating by defeating an in-form Jaquelyne Cristian 6-4, 3-6, 6-4. The Romanian player, who is especially good on clay, had defeated France's Caroline Garcia in the first round. For her part, Kerber defeated Naomi Osaka in the first round. Next for Kerber is Leylah Fernandez.

Elina Svitolina defeated Jessica Pegula today, and Danielle Collins--playing in her first and last Olympic Games--defeated Caroline Wozniacki. A delightful surprise came in the form of Anna Karolina Schmiedlova's advancement to the round of 16. What was impressive about it was that she beat both Katie Boulter and Beatriz Haddad Maia to get there. Schmiedlova's backhand on a clay court can be impressive, and it will have to stay that way for her next match, in which she'll play against French Open runner-up Jasmine Paolini.

Here is the round of 16 singles draw:

Iga Swiatek (1) vs. Wang Xiyu
Camila Osorio vs. Danielle Collins (8)
Angie Kerber vs. Leylah Fernandez (16)
Emma Navarro (11) vs. Zheng Qinwen (6)
Elina Svitolina vs. Barbora Krejcikova (9)
Anna Karolina Schmiedlova vs. Jasmine Paolini (4)
Maria Sakkari (7) vs. Marta Kostyuk (12)
Donna Vekic (13) vs. Coco Gauff (2)

There are three USA players remaining in the draw, two Ukrainian players, and two Chinese players. One would generally expect to see more Czech players, but 2021 silver medal winner Marketa Vondrousova had to withdraw, Petra Kvitova is at home with her new baby, and both Karolina Muchova and Linda Noskova have already been defeated.
