Razzano upset by lucky loser in Charleston

Monique Adamczak, who became the lucky loser when Dominika Cibulkova withdrew from the Family Circle Cup, made the most of her circumstances today by defeating 11th seed Virginie Razzano in the first round. Razzano lost the first round 4-6, but won the second 6-0, and was up 4-0 in the third, eventually winning it 6-2.

15th seed Melinda Czink, who reached the quarterfinals last year, was also upset in the first round. Czink was defeated 7-6, 6-3 by Michaella Krajicek, who won the first set tiebreak 11-9.

Olga Govortsova had to retire in her first round match because of tendonitis in her left knee; Vera Dushevina advanced to the second round.

Bethanie Mattek-Sands and Julia Goerges played for two hours and 38 minutes on the Althea Gibson Club Court, with Mattek-Sands prevailing 6-7, 6-4, 7-5.

In doubles, Peng Shuai and Elena Vesnina, the 4th seeds, lost their first set against Caroline Wozniacki and Malou Ejdesgaard. The Danish pair surprisingly beat them 6-0, but Peng and Vesnina took the second set 6-3, and were dominant in the super-tiebreak, winning it 10-2. They got some last-minute help from Wozniacki, who double-faulted both of her last two serves.
