Quote of the week
"If someone makes me really angry I might have to get into a little bit of an argument, but my goal is to try to stay calm if I can. If not, I’m going out with a bang as I did the past two years."
i don't think i can take another one of her outbursts...one is defensible (everyone makes mistakes)...a second time during extenuating circumstances is also somewhat ok...but a third time and at 31...it becomes a bit hard to defend...
I have always wondered why tennis players get into arguments with umpires at all...i mean wouldn't it be more fun for them to hit an unforced error in the umpire's direction on the following point...and then have a sarcastic "sorry" hand?
anyway...
regarding the Capriati responses...it was really interesting to see the difference in the comments between the former players (Schett, Majoli) and the former champions (HIngis, Davenport, Venus, Navratilova)...like they were respectful, but they also didn't give an inch either...like they spoke as peers...they didn't go overboard with the praise but just spoke of their respect for her. i feel like most retirement responses in the real world are filled with only effusive praise, but these former champions definitely still have their champion mindset. it was interesting.
Good point about the Capriati tribute quotes. A lot of respect, no matter what, though. Majoli was at the ceremony, and Capriati had some fun with her.
Serena was in very good humor when she made that remark, pretty much making fun of herself. It will be helpful, nevertheless, if You-Know-Who isn't the chair umpire, should Serena make the semifinals or final :)
Only one problem with "if you-know-whom isn't the chair umpire": it can't be Eva Asderaki, and it can't be Mariana Alves either. Maybe there should be a "no blonde umpires with ponytails" rule for Serena. And everyone calling lines should be at least 6 feet tall and weigh at least 200 pounds. :-)
