Kuznetsova out, Kudryavtseva in

I learned a few days ago that Svetlana Kuznetsova had hurt her shoulder and would not be playing in the Fed cup semifinal against the U.S. this coming weekend, but I wanted to wait until I knew who her replacement was before I said anything. Now I know--it is Alla Kudryavtseva, the player who gave Venus Williams so much trouble in the first round of Wimbledon.

Something to add to your "why can't they pronounce players' names right" file: during Wimbledon I heard a commentator--I forget which one; definitely male; definitely on ESPN; pronounce Kudryavtseva very close--if not the same way--as if it were Kuznetsova. Here's hoping the Fed Cup will bring enough awareness of Kudryavtseva to get people to at least attempt a correct pronunciation rather than assuming it is just like another Russian's.

I heard that, too. ESPN's commentators are, for the most part, too lazy, I think, to be bothered with such niceties as pronouncing people's names correctly. I often think they are not that bright, either.
