Solid (gold) Serena

It took only 63 minutes for Serena Williams to beat Maria Sharapova 6-0, 6-1 in the final of the Olympic Games, and--in doing so--to complete the career Golden Slam. (Commentators take note--it is not the Golden Slam--only Steffi Graf won that, and she might have won it twice had she not had to withdraw from a major.) Williams was so dominant, there was virtually nothing Sharapova could do to assert herself--and that's saying something, given  the nature of Sharapova's game.

Williams' last two points were aces, and what else would we expect from her? As she herself recently said "You know how I like to do it." Oh, yes.

Earlier in the day, world number 1 Victoria Azarenka won the bronze medal by defeating Maria Kirilenko 6-3, 6-4. Down 0-3 in the second set, Kirilenko went from looking upset to looking determined, and she broke Azarenka, held at love, then broke Azarenka again. It looked like it might turn into a three-set contest, but Azarenka didn't let that happen.

Azarenka's victory marks the first time anyone from Belarus has ever won an Olympic medal in tennis.

This, by the way, is how it feels to win a career Golden Slam:

  2. Ah, that was supposed to be the end of the sentence. Thanks--and thanks.
