Clijsters withdraws from Wimbledon

Kim Clijsters withdrew from Wimbledon today, after injuring her foot in Eastbourne. Clijsters told the press that the injury is not related to the ankle injury that recently kept her off the court. The world number 2 was referring to an injury she sustained while dancing at her cousin's wedding earlier in the year. She also had wrist and shoulder injuries during that time.

Clijsters' withdrawal makes Vera Zvonareva the number 2 seed at Wimbledon. Serena Williams, who has been out for almost a year and is currently ranked number 26 in the world, will be seeded 7th at Wimbledon, the only major in which discretionary seeding is permitted. Five-time Wimbledon champion Venus Williams, who has just returned to the tour after a four-month injury layoff, is seeded 23rd. Venus Williams is ranked number 33 in the world.

Clijsters' withdrawal also means that Tsvetana Pironkova becomes the 32nd seed at the event.
