Romina Oprandi had a big win today in the second round of the Unicef Open, but the occasion may have been even bigger for her opponent, Kim Clijsters. Clijsters, the number 1 seed at the tournament, stumbled when she slid toward the net in the second game of the match. As a result, she felt pain in her recently-injured ankle. Clijsters said that she took some pain medication, which helped her knee, but not her ankle. Oprandi, using drop shots against her opponent's serve, defeated Clijsters 7-6, 6-3.
Clijsters, who is ranked nunber 2 in the world, is returning to Belgium to get a medical consultation. The result of that consultation will determine whether she plays at Wimbledon.
Also at the Unicef Open, 2nd seeds Sara Errani and Roberta Vinci were upset by the ad hoc team of Dominika Cibulkova and Flavia Pennetta.
In Eastbourne, Serena Williams--playing for the first time in almost a year--defeated Tsvetana Pironkova 1-6, 6-3, 6-4. All of the seeds won today, but--given the competitive draw in Eastbourne--several notable players made an exit. Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, Zheng Jie, Lucie Safarova, and Julia Goerges are all out.
Andrea Hlavackova and Lucie Hradecka, the French Open champions, lost in the first round to 2nd seeds Liezel Huber and Lisa Raymond.
hoping Kimmie will be right for Wimby!
ReplyDeleteSince the AO everything seems to be going against her, except for that let cord at RG :P
This career is starting to look like the first one--one injury after another. I hope she's okay for Wimbledon, too.
ReplyDeleteThe other concern is that these injuries really wear a player down ... not just physcially, but psychologically also. All the rehab, doctor/physio consultations and subsequent anxious moments hoping it doesn't flare up again.
ReplyDeleteIt was definitely a factor (among others) in Kim retiring the first time. I hope she plays on till adleast Olympics 2012.
I hope she'll be okay for Wimbledon as she's a good player. She just has to be strong.
