I just about can't turn a corner without seeing Melinda Czink. She's on the practice courts, hitting in the stadium, watching matches, or just strolling through the lawn. The often-entertaining 15th seed plays Michaella Krajicek tomorrow in the first round.
There were two events today that drew big crowds. Melanie Oudin was on one of the practice courts, and a lot of people came to watch her. Oudin has the feature match tomorrow night, against Jill Craybas. The other crowd magnet was Patty Schnyder's first round doubles match. Schnyder is a huge favorite in Charleston, and her matches are always packed. Unfortuntately, though, her 2010 Charleston doubles campaign is over: She and partner Liga Dekmeijere lost to Vania King and Krajicek.
Match Point Market is shoppers' row at the Family Circle Cup. I made a stop today at Ella Vickers, which features really nice bags and accessories made of recycled sailcloth products. The products are all eco-friendly and ocean-durable. There are also a number of tennis-themed gifts and tennis items throughout the market.
A Current electric car is on display at the tournament; test-driving was offered today.
Members of the cast of Army Wives were on hand this evening for the Citizens of the World event, which was presented by Prudential. The free event, a celebration of diversity, included an exhibition match featuring local junior star Shelby Rogers, tennis clinics, music, and recognition of members of the various military branches.
I believe everybody ought to look at this.
