Elena Vesnina will lead the Russian Fed Cup team in its quarterfinal matches against Serbia next month. Other team members include Alisa Kleybanova, Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova and Ekaterina Makarova. Jelena Jankovic is expected to lead the Serbian team.
Missing, obviously, are top Russians Safina, Kuznetsova, Dementieva, Zvonareva, and Petrova. Russian Fed Cup captain Shamil Tarpishchev says that both injuries and the timing of the quarterfinal have made his top players unavailable.
There has always been a running joke that Russia could have three Fed Cup squads. The combination of Vesnina, Kleybanova and Pavlyuchenkova is not to be taken lightly.
Kuznetsova, by the way, was none too pleased with Tarpischchev's remarks that her success on the tour had caused her to abandon Fed Cup.
