Wozniacki and Barthel win tournaments

Top-seeded Caroline Wozniacki, who took a wild card into the Istanbul Cup, won the event today when she defeated 2nd seed Roberta Vinci 6-1, 6-1. This is Wozniacki's 22nd WTA singles title, and her first of the 2014 season. The doubles title was won by Misaki Doi and Elena Svitolina. Doi and Svitolina defeated Oksana Kalashnikova and Paula Kania 6-4, 6-0. Both teams were unseeded.

Mona Barthel won her third WTA title in Bastad, also today, when she defeated Chanelle Scheepers 6-3, 7-6 in the final. None of the seeded players made it to the quarterfinals, something that had not happened on the tour for five years. It seems somehow "right" that the mercurial Barthel should win under these circumstances.

Andreja Klepac and Maria-Teresa Torro-Flor won the Bastad doubles title, defeating Jocelyn Rae and Anna Smith 6-1, 6-1.

  1. Nothing to do with what you wrote but....I was surprised to see that Kvitova and Bouchard are 2 of the few top 25 players playing 4 tourneys this summer. Most of the top players usually play Cincy and Canada (Montreal this year) w maybe one more thrown in. Hope they don't get burned out by the USO.

Also Halep is playing only Cincy and New Haven. Montreal is a Premier 5 like Cincy but you only have to play 4 of the P-5's. So I am assuming she will play both tournments in the fall that are back to back (Beijing a Mandatory, following Wuhan a P-5. I am wondering if skipping Montreal is to keep her from getting injured as she seemed to so often this year (dubai, miami, rome, den bosch) maybe they are addressing her problems. Also she does well on hard courts and maybe her posse thinks she will peak at USO if she doesn't play so much.

Happy to see Wozniacki win one. Maybe this will give her some confidence. She didn't sail through but she got through.

Wonder if Serena will show up at Stanford. I hope she is doing better.

  2. I have a feeling that Petra might drop out of one of those. And I think it's a really good idea for Halep to limit her time on the hard courts pre-U.S. Open. I also hope that her injury issues are being addressed seriously, and not just via "skip a few tournaments" and see how you do" (though that's probably a good idea, too).

I wonder if Wozniacki is having a "Pennetta moment" about now.

  3. I'm not a Wozniacki fan - way too defensive a player - but I was very happy with this result given her recent personal travails.

  5. Isn't it been a while Wozniacki has won a tournament. Her last title win was at Luxemburg 2013 I think.

  6. Yes, she was even hinting about "early" retirement. Apparently, she forgot to lower her expectations and got carried away with future plans.
