Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, seeded 3rd at the Portugal Open, won the singles title today when she defeated Carla Suarez Navarro 7-5. 6-2 in the final. 2nd seeds Chan Hao-Ching and Kristina Mladenovic won the doubles title, defeating Darja Jurak and Katalin Marosi 7-6, 6-2.
This year marked the tournament's debut on the tour. Pavlyuchenkova has now won five WTA titles.
Great win for Pavlyuchenkova in Oeiras! She posted a nice photo of herself with new coach Hingis later, via Instagram:

Sorry for Suarez Navarro, though. A rather tough coincidence for her yesterday: Pavlyuchenkova's 5th WTA title (her 1st on clay) and Suarez Navarro 5th loss in WTA finals (all 5 on clay). Also, runner-up result for the 2nd consecutive year in Portugal (lost to Kanepi in last year's final, whereas she did win her match against Kanepi this year).

PS: Quite a few surprises/disappointments for women's singles matches played today in Madrid (1st round).
Mladenovic is becoming quite the doubles player. 3 titles last year and 3 this year. She is also starting to better here and there in singles.
ReplyDeleteThat's a great photo.
ReplyDeleteYes, some of today's Madrid scores were crazy. What's going on with Li?
Sunny, Mladenovic was a lot of fun to watch in Charleston. She and Safarova hadn't played together until they stepped onto the court for their first round.
