Passing shots

With all the summer tennis excitement, I forgot to mention that Amelie Mauresmo, who was on the short list to be France's new Davis Cup captain, has been named France's new Fed Cup captain.

A reader reminded me today about the current controversy over Taylor Townsend's fitness.

Esther Vergeer has won her fourth Paralympic Games gold medal. Vergeer defeated Aniek Van Koot  6-0, 6-3 in the final in London. The match marked the champion's 470th consecutive win.

So now we're taking some time out to bash Sara Errani, too?

Here is some data on Serena Williams' performances at the majors.

Victoria Azarenka and Maria Sharapova have qualified for the WTA Championships. Sara Errani and Roberta Vinci have qualified in doubles.

Martina Hingis and Helena Sukova have been nominated for membership in the International Tennis Hall of Fame.

  1. Regarding the Sara Errani statement. I am really tired of the issue. Are bloggers and commentators wanting to rile people up so they will riot in the stands? It seems people were pretty much into the Azarenka-Sharapova game. Clapping, getting excited. If they didn't like the sounds why didn't they give the players the cold shoulder. Instead they were invested and enjoying the close match.

The WTA basically gave a statement about what they were going to do. That is what the commentators kept asking for. Now that it is done why can't we stop hearing the commentators and pundits and their whining, shrill, voices?

And if Taylor Townsend can be no 1 in the juniors, win the Aussie junior singles and doubles and now win the US Open junior doubles then she seems to be doing fine. If the USTA wants to give advice about weight and the future of her health that is one thing. But to be punitive about it and in essence demean her is another thing.

  2. If he's watching the men's match right now, then I hope we see a comment from him on Ferrer's "unnecessary" sounds.

And as for Errani's brevity: First, what's wrong with that? And more significant, English is not her first language and she says she has difficulty with it. Maybe ask her questions in Italian next time?
