Three qualifiers and a lucky loser advanced to the second round of Rogers Cup competition in Montreal today. Jarmila Groth defeated Alona Bondarenko 7-6, 6-2, Iveta Benesova defeated Sara Errani 6-3, 6-2, Vania King beat Anabel Medina Garrigues 4-6, 6-1, 6-2, and Patty Schnyder had a 6-7, 7-5, 6-2 win over wild card Virginie Razzano.
Kaia Kanepi upset 14th seed Shahar Peer, Dinara Safina had a straight-set victory over Andrea Petkovic, and 16th seed Aravane Rezai defeated Petra Kvitova 6-7, 7-5, 6-3, which is about the scoreline I expected.
Canadian wild cards Aleksandra Wozniak and Stephanie Dubois lost to Timea Bacsinszky and Klara Zakopalova; the latter match went to three sets.
As if having a coach come down court side was not bad enough. In last night's match with Klara and Dubois. Klara had Groth as her coach. It was good to see but they still need to get rid of it.
ReplyDeleteKlara played before a very hostile Montreal crowd last night. They were all cheering on Dubois. Either Montreal is as slow as molasses or the ladies were hitting the ball with absolutely no pace or the tv just slowed everything down. It was a nice match but Dubois is not going further in the rankings than she is right now.
Rezai v. Petra match was very good. Too many breaks of serve but very competitive until it was not. Also saw Kaia v. Shahar. It looks like Shahar has regressed from her early year form.
I have to say that whatever camera angles they are using in Montreal, the players all look fit and toned. Nice to see. I notice that some cameras make the players appear out of shape, but this one, not a chance.
Safina also looked tall and fit. She does dominate the court with her presence. Petkovic, I have no idea what else to say about her. She cannot finish a point on a consistent basis. She has the game, but the mentality is in the toilet.
Thanks for the match reports, Karen. Klara is another of the tour's under-achievers; I like watching her on a good day.
ReplyDeleteI just knew the Rezai-Kvitova match would be interesting, one way or the other.
