Henin out until September

Justine Henin, who fell onto her arm at Wimbledon during her match against Kim Clijsters, revealed today that she has a partial ligament fracture in her right elbow. Henin has withdrawn from the "Best of Belgium" exhibition, and does not expect to be at the U.S. Open.

  1. Haven't thay sold something like 30,000 tickets for that exo? Unfortunate timing, sounds like a nasty injury.

  2. It doesn't sound good at all. My understanding is that Serena is going to take Justine's place, so it's no longer best of the Belgians.

  3. It's very sad news indeed, confirming my observations regarding Justine's play after she fell. I think there is little question that the injury cost her the match with Clijsters and probably a great shot at the Wimbledon title. Is another retirement a possibility? Now I would have to say, "maybe." Just so unlucky!

  4. I agree...this is really unfortunate. I hope it turns out not to be as serious as it seems.

  5. Knowing the conservative way in which Henin and her team approach injuries, we're talking 2 months until she starts practicing again and likely mid-October before she would compete. But that's the last month of the season prior to the year-end championships, for which Justine now cannot qualify.

So she faces a hard choice: retire for good or simply start her comeback over again in Australia 2011, now a year older and again with no ranking to speak of.

At this point I hope and believe she will try the latter (Justine is nothing if not stubborn), but she'll turn 29 at next year's French Open. This is just a huge, huge setback -- no question. And the way she was playing at the point she was injured... it's pure heartbreak for her fans, I can attest!

  6. i am completely sad. justine was playing so well in wimby leading up, and likely to go all the way. and that fall....damn it. she was starting to build up confidence and she played with such motivation.

  7. She doesn't lose her ranking. She just does not gain any more points. It is merely a setback for her. She will be back better than ever.
