Wimbledon draw to be made tomorrow

Venus and Serena Williams--the Queen of Grass and the defending champion, repectively--will be on opposite sides of the draw that is produced tomorrow at the All England Club. The possibility of our seeing another all-Williams final is high, though there are a few players not named "Williams" who could break through to the final.

Missing from the draw will be the following players:
Peng Shuai (illness)
Sabine Lisicki (ankle injury)
Elena Dementieva (calf injury)
Virginie Razzano (hip injury)
Carla Suarez Navarro (ankle injury)

Lisicki was a quarterfinalist last year, and Dementieva was a semifinalist. Razzano was in the round of 16.

Qualifying has concluded, and these are the twelve qualifiers:

Kaia Kanepi
Nuria Llagostera Vives
Romina Sarina Oprandi
Bethanie Mattek-Sands
Shenay Perry
Anastaiya Yakimova
Greta Arn
Mirjana Lucic
Kurumi Nara
Monica Niculescu
Andrea Hlavackova
Eleni Daniilidou

  1. It's such a shame that Dementieva and Lisicki will be missing from Wimbledon this year. It seems like Lisicki has been out of action for a very long time.

I can't wait for the Wimbledon draw. It should be very interesting, considering Justine and Kim will be present this year. Although Serena and Venus are undisputedly the best players on grass and while all Williams finals have been quite enchanting over the years, I am becoming a bit tired of this and it would be great to see someone else winning Wimbledon. Personally, I hope to see Clijsters or Sharapova winning the whole thing.

  2. Lisicki has been out a long time. But it's better for her to stay out until she is totally healed, than to come back and then have to retire in another match.

Having said that, I'm sorry she isn't going to be there. And I think it's beyond sad that Dementieva won't be at Wimbledon. She came so close last year.

When it comes to Wimbledon, it's hard to beat the sisters! But anything can happen.

  3. Yes, the draw should tell a lot. I actually doubt that we're ever going to see another Williams-Williams grand slam final, but if it happens it will certainly be at Wimbledon and probably this year. On the other surfaces, I think it is too difficult for Venus.

  4. I agree, Jen, and I think that Venus will come out blazing at this Wimbledon.

Makarova is going to be--at the least--the Eastbourne runner-up, and--assuming she gets past Szavay in the first round of Wimbledon--her reward is a second round against Venus!

  5. I agree, Diane. Venus has to be flying high about this draw too. Nothing much standing in the way of reaching the semis -- maybe vs the survivor of the likely Henin - Clijsters 4th round clash. And speaking of potential 4th round blockbusters -- Serena gets Sharapova! Fun stuff.
