Dementieva upset in Warsaw

It took her almost three hours, but qualifier Tsvetana Pironkova upset 2nd seed Elena Dementieva today in Warsaw. Pironkova's 7-5, 4-6, 6-4 victory came, at least in part, with the aid of 59 unforced errors from Dementieva.

Top seed Caroline Wozniacki had to go three sets with Palona Hercog, but she did advance to the next round.

In Strasbourg, both Lucie Hradecka and 8th seed Elena Baltacha retired during their 2nd round matches--Hradecka with a left wrist injury, and Baltacha with a lower back problem.

There were also upsets in Strasbourg. Sofia Arvidsson defeated 3rd seed (and wild card) Virginie Razzano and Julie Goerges defeated 6th seed Sybille Bammer.

  1. Diane, I understand that the WTA is looking into her match in Warsaw seeing as she had her flight booked to go to Paris hours before the end of her match and got to Paris a few hours after her loss.

  2. I read that in a newspaper, but my guess is that she (and others) had all kinds of flights booked to Paris. She would want to get to Paris as soon as possible, and to not leave anything to fate, is what I took out of it.

  3. A bit strange that you would book a flight hours before your match ended and before even the middle of the tournament. Dont think she tanked but it does look suspicious.

  4. Again, my guess is that players book multiple flights and do delays frequently.

  5. I don't think she is the only one doing that, Caroline's ankle couldn't be so much worse than yesterday, but nothing really can be proved, they all have valid excuse. There shouldn't be any important tournament the week before GS, period! Even the lower ranked players had dilema, keep playing or loose the chance to play RG qualification, which started already. Example, Marta Domachowska loosing to Polish junior in 1 r, flying to Paris to play 1 r match the next day. There were also first round retirements in Strasburg, but who can really blame those girls?
