Two-time winner of the Internazionali BNL d'Italia Amelie Mauresmo went out in the first round today, losing 6-4, 6-7, 2-6 to Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez. With the notable exception of the French Open, the European clay court tour has historically been a good one for Mauresmo. The Frenchwoman also tends to do well in tiebreaks, but not today.
The left-handed Martinez Sanchez, ranked number 46 in the world, won her first singles title this year in Bogota.
Also going out in the first round were Li Na, recently back from knee surgery, who lost to Sybille Bammer--and Samantha Stosur, who lost to Yaroslava Shvedova.

the score line seems to indicate another second set meltdown. :s better luck for RG momo.
Dani
She was actually down 5-3 in the second set and came back
she should have won it after that, but it was not to be
She has been on the circuit for quite a while now - I doubt if she has the same hunger and energy as she first did. Being on the tour for so long has to take it out of you - just take a look at Roger Federer and what he is going though and he is arguably the greatest player of all time!
I think you're right, Laura. But I would add that I think that if the appendicitis and resulting injury--plus the thigh injury--had not occurred, we would be seeing much better results from her. In fact, it was just the thigh injury, I think she would be performing better. 2007 was just a dreadful year for Mauresmo.
Thanks Diane.
