Top qualifying seed out in Zurich
Zheng Jie, the number 1 seed among qualifiers (it sounds so crazy to even see the word "qualifier" next to her name) in Zurich, has gone out in the first round, a victim of the resurgent Anna-Lena Groenefeld. Groenefeld defeated her, 6-2, 6-3.
Well when I saw ALG's draw I was so annoyed because Zheng is too good to be in qualifying! But I'm so pleased that she pulled it off, now I hope she qualifies. Strange Zheng was in qualies...she is ranked higher than some people in the main draw. Must have entered the tournament when she was ranked lower...
These final tournaments are small, and so many really good players are having to qualify because of the size and because of prior rankings. It's the same on the men's side. Look at the qualifying draw for Madrid.
