I have no idea what the "Miss Kremlin Cup" award is

But Dinara Safina won the inaugural one yesterday.

  1. Ugh. Sounds like a beauty (as in heels and cleavage) show. Could that be?

One question: Do you think these young women feel the need to be overfeminine in fashion choices because they are great athletes or is it kind of pushed on them by the media?

  2. In fairness, there was also an ATP award given, the "Mr. Fair Play" award, which went to Andreev.

I think tour players are pressured by the culture in general to be whatever the culture has decided is "feminine," and to make sure no one thinks they are--horrors!--lesbians. The problem is even worse in the UK (http://tinyurl.com/3py2hl), where young girls are put under extreme pressure to be fake feminine.

And check out what's going on in golf, Walter: http://afterata.blogspot.com/2008/10/w7.html

to use an expression my Granny used, Diane.....heaven forfend! I can just see her raising an eyebrow and looking over the top of her glasses... she was a feminist and quite a ground breaker in her day, back around 1918...... ;)
