Pierce withdraws from Olympics
Mary Pierce, who was named to the French Olympic team toward the end of last month, has withdrawn because of continuing troubles with her knee. It is unknown whether Amelie Mauresmo will take her place.
It's shame they didn't take Amelie in the (singles) team from the begining. For me, to take Mary (more than a year off the court), and not taking Amelie, it was strange. :-/
Yeah, I thought it was strange, too, U, but I heard (don't know if it's true) that it was Amelie's request to be removed from the list. I was surprised to hear that Pierce was ever put the list; her injury is the kind that usually stops a career.
Hi Diane...I heard that the FFT didn't even tell Amelie she wasn't selected for singles - she found out from the press. :O
even though Amelie has already commited to Cincinati I hope she changes her mind and go to the Olympics. she has said the olympics are very special to her and that this will most likely be her last one. i guess an easier way to look at this would be looking back 10 years from now, will she regret not going to the olympics - probably yes, will she regret pulling out of cincinati - probably not.
Interesting. Of course, I would like for Amelie to boycott the Olympics, but she apparently has other sentiments about the matter. One way or the other, the French team is in trouble. If Golovin is even able to go, she won't be match-tough. They do have Cornet and Razzano, however.
momo's withdraw annoucement is published on her official website. (www.ameliemauresmo.fr) It was also widely publicised by the media. (as it was a suprise to a lot of people that FFT would pick Pierce who haven't played for 2 years!)
Mary's withdraw announcement was in a French paper. (L'equipe?)

p.s. I was referring to Momo and Mary's withdraw from the Olympics.
ReplyDeleteIt was just my opinion that momo should change her schedule and play the Olympics instead of Cincinnati.
