Szavay wins China Open

Agnes Szavay (all together now, sports media--it's pronounced SHAH-veye) won the China Open today, defeating Jelena Jankovic 6-7, 7-5, 6-2. Szavay, who was down 0-5 in the second set, saved a match point (with a second serve ace) at 1-5. Szavay was also up 5-0 in the first set tiebreak, but Jankovic saved three match points to win the set. The match lasted three hours and appears to have been one of the year's real thrillers. Szavay now enters the top 20.

I was thinking that Tamira Paszek was going to be the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour Newcomer of the Year, but it all points to Szavay now, doesn't it?

"Agnes Szavay (all together now, sports media--it's pronounced SHAH-veye)"
Sorry, but you got the pronunciation wrong.
In Hungarian the letter combination "sz" pronounced the same as the letter "s" in most English words.
Thus, the pronunciation is as follows :
First the "sz" is pronounced as the first letter in the English word "see".
The vowel following it is pronounced as the vowel in the English word "car".
The pronunciation of the vowel in the second syllable approximates the vowel in the word "cup". The pronunciation for the "y" at the end of the name approximates the vowel in "six".
OK, now string it all together :-)

I am using the pronunciation she provided to the WTA Tour, and the one used by European umpires and announcers. Perhaps a different part of Hungary? Or perhaps the Tour site needs correcting.

But either way, American commentators butcher it.

you are right, the Tour site needs to be corrected... I'm Hungarian, too.

Hi! I'm from Hungary too and I can only confirm what the other Hungarians have said: that pronunciation is definitely incorrect. I doubt she provided that version for the WTA site! Not all the umpires use the incorrect version; for example, one umpire at the Paris tournament pronounced it (almost) correctly! The pronunciation is the same in every part of Hungary! The WTA site needs to be corrected and I'm going to send them an email about that!

Hello,

I would to know if a Hungarian of the sites rememberts the name of a Hungarian who was seeded 30-50 something like 15-20 years ago.

One of the most attractive players seen on courts so far (according to me).

Thanks for your answer.
