Passing shots

Bad news: Andrea Petkovic injured her knee--yes, that knee--in the first round of Hopman Cup play. Petkovic retired against Ashleigh Barty.

Caroline Wozniacki is wearing a diamond ring on her "engagement ring" finger, and the rumor--certainly not unfounded--is that she and Rory McIlroy will be married.

Li Na defeated Victoria Azarenka 6-3, 2-6. 10-7 in exhibition play in Thailand. Redfoo was with Azarenka in Hua Hin.

Vera Zvonareva has withdrawn from the Australian Open. The Russian star is dealing with the same shoulder injury that caused her to withdraw from the 2012 French Open. She missed the U.S. Open because of a viral illness.

Meanwhile, Serena Williams recently had minor surgery performed on both of her big toes. And Maria Sharapova has a collarbone injury.

2011 Australian Open U.S. wild card playoff winner Madison Keys has done it again. Keys defeated Mallory Burdette (and can you think of two players you'd rather see in the final?) to get her second straight wild card into the Melbourne main draw. Also winning a wild card was Bojana Bobusic, who won the Australian playoffs.

Dave Taylor has resigned his post as Australian Fed Cup captain so that he can focus solely on his other position--coaching Sam Stosur.

L'Equipe has named Serena Williams 2012's Sportswoman of the Year.

Sugarpova hits the West Coast.

A $125,000-purse WTA clay court tournament will be held in Cali, Columbia in February.
