Kanepi wins Palermo, Szavay wins Prague

Kaia Kanepi, seeded 5th at the Internazionali Femminili di Tennis di Palermo, won the championship today. Kanepi defeated top seed and defending champion (and wild card) Flavia Pennetta 6-4, 6-3. Kanepi is now 3-3 against Pennetta. This is Kanepi's first Sony Ericsson WTA Tour title.

Agnes Szavay, who won the Budapest title last week, won the Prague title today, defeating Barbora Zahlavova Strycova 6-2, 1-6, 6-2. Szavay and Zahlavova Strycova were seeded 7th and 8th, respectively. This was Zahlavova Strycova's first tour final.

Also repeating were the unseeded Timea Bacsinszy and Tathiana Garbin. They won the Budapest doubles title last week, and today, they won the Prague title, defeating Monica Niculescu and Szavay 7-5, 7-6.

Congrats to Kanepi, a player that I have always enjoyed watching just because of her game and the professionalism that she brings to the court. She may not have the face and body that sponsors like to see but she has a very effective game and it was good to see her not let the moment get to her like she did in Wimbledon.

After watching the matches from Palermo all week, on the day that I would have loved to have seen Kanepi take the title we had a 3 hour power cut here where I live. No internet, no power, no match. I am so upset.

Congrats also to my girl Agnes for taking her second title in as many weeks. The tears at the end of the match were so heartfelt. You could tell that this was a hard won title. Good to see.

Her opponent could learn from that. For a woman who is married, Barbora Strycova behaves like a child. She threw tantrums all week, berated her coach/husband from the stands, berated him when he came down to coach her and generally made an a** of herself on court. The woman has a lot to learn about being a professional.

This was her home tournament and while the crowds were not sitting on top of themselves, they were encouraging the home players a lot this week. For her to then cursorily shake her opponent's hand at the end of the match says a lot about her lack of sportsmanship. Ugh

Unfortunately, Zahlavova Strycova pulls this kind of stunt quite a bit. Some things never change.

I wonder if these back-to-back titles will give Agnes enough confidence to really get into the mix again.

We lost our Internet, too. It seemed that something was wrong with our modem, but when we power-cycled the router, everything came back.

Well I enjoyed seeing Kanepi and Szavay win this week. For Kanepi it was consolidation of what she did at Wimbledon and for Szavay maybe a start back towards the higher rankings which was expected of her. I didn't get to see either. We only have expanded basic-thus ESPN2-and a nice person gives me TennisTV online for B-day and the Winter Holidays. Oh, well.

Sunny, sometimes you can find tournaments on UStream and sites like that. Also, lobby your ISP for ESPN3 (formerly, ESPN 360), which shows some tennis, also.

Word on the street is that Serena may not play the US Open. Her mother says she is being a baby. Sounds like this cut foot may be more serious than we all thought.

Diane, are those other live-streaming sites, safe sites? Just don't want any viruses?

Yes, UStream is safe. So is ChannelSurfing.net, which provides a variety of streams, including UStream (you'll have to X out the box with messages from hot girls in your area, though).
