Both Clijsters and Henin were absolutely firm in their resolve to remain retired--Clijsters because of her beaten up body, and Henin because of burnout and a desire to get on with her life. A sample of two suggests that Belgian women may not be that credible, despite being very convincing.

Was watching a 21-year-old Henin play 27-year-old Capriati last night on Tennis Channel's encore of their 2003 USO match and thought to myself that it was sad that they're both out of the game. I'm not that surprised that Clijsters came back but I was dead certain that Justine wouldn't. But time will tell.

It's funny, my thought process was totally opposite from Mel's. Considering her long-time intense competitiveness, I always thought that Henin would eventually be back. While I thought Clijsters was gone for good, largely because I never thought she was seriously driven enough to attempt to re-climb the ladder.
Hey if Justine does come back, I can only hope is for Kim to have a reversal of fortune against her and begin winning the big ones against her. That would be sweet validation for Kim who always struggled against her countrywoman.

As for Henin, I guess I'll believe it when I see it.
So, the next time a tennis player says she is going to retire, let's just have a party and sing "liar, liar, You'll be back." Ha! Ha!
