Petra Kvitova, seeded 5th in Montreal, won the title today when she defeated 10th seed Li Na 7-5, 2-6, 6-3. For so long, many of us have wanted to see both of these players reach a final, and they reached the same one, playing for over two and a quarter hours. And while she lapsed in the second set, the Czech star went on to win on all 18 of her first serves in the final set. This was Kvitova's first title (notwithstanding Fed Cup) of the year, and her first North American hard court title ever.
Kvitova's asthma tends to give her problems on the North American continent, but here's hoping she can find a way around her illness for the remainder of the North American season.
Meanwhile, in Cincinnati, Jelena Jankovic served for the match in the second set, and later held five match points in the third set tiebreak of her opening round match against Peng Shuai. But it was Peng who won--5-7, 7-5, 7-6. Oh, Jelena.
Also in Cincinnati, wild card Camila Giorgi defeated 14th seed Francesca Schiavone in straight sets, and Mona Barthel defeated Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez 6-4, 6-0. Barthel has had a very disappointing season, but is obviously on a better path.
