Williams not certain for U.S. Open

According to the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour, world number 1 Serena Williams may not play in the 2010 U.S. Open. Williams cut her foot in a restaurant in Miami, and the injury required surgery. She has already withdrawn from the World Team Tennis season, and from three tournaments leading up to the Open.

Do you, as well, get some sense that this is at least in some part a WTA/CIA -- WTA Covers It's You-Know-What -- situation, seeing that this "official statement" comes so quickly after so many headlines were made questioning Serena's "real" condition and intention? Not to mention Williams' own chipper Tweet and nod to the healing power of "those Belgian doctors and waffles"

Oh, yes I do. In fact, I don't think I've ever seen the tour P.R. staff (an entire issue in itself, for moi) rush to get a statement out so fast.

What I wish--although it's perfectly within Serena's right to stay quiet about her injury--is that we knew more about the injury and the surgery. My guess is that the cut was deeper than she first thought, and there is concern about her muscle tissue.

I guess it's a good thing she didn't cut her foot in Dubai, huh? :D
