Kuznetsova out in 1st round in Madrid

Main draw play began today in Madrid, and we already have a major upset. 5th seed Svetlana Kuznetsova was defeated 6-3, 2-6, 6-0 by Shahar Peer. Things haven't been going well at all for the French Open defending champion.

Things haven't been going well for Sara Errani, either. Andrea Petkovic defeated her today, 6-7, 6-1, 7-5. I'm not sure why Errani is having so much trouble lately.

Vera Zvonareva and Melanie Oudin broke each other ten times in their first round match. Zvonareva prevailed, 6-3, 6-4.

Is this an off year for Sveta? 2008 she hit a lot of finals but couldn't win.2009 of course, Stuttgart, Paris and Beijing. Now, not so great so far at all. She seems to just be up and down all her career. She'll hit a grand slam final here and there and of course won two which seems to keep her up in the rankings.

She seems to be on a major downhill slide right now. I don't know what's wrong. Kuznetsova has always had issues with mental toughness, but going out early in tournaments is something new.
