Venus Williams' serve left her in her Sony Ericsson Open semifinal match against Serena Williams. Perhaps it is basking on the beach somewhere in Key Biscayne, on a blanket next to Sam Stosur's serve. Two of the best servers in women's tennis were defeated in Miami, at least partly, because they could not produce their serves.
Tonight marked the twentieth time that the Williams sisters have played each other on the tour, and with Serena's victory, they are now 10 and 10 against each other. Doubtless, a lot of people felt there was an inevitability that Serena would win tonight, since a win means that she is a match away from claiming her sixth Miami title, and it also means that she gets to hold on to her number 1 ranking. But if her sister's serve had been better, there might have been a different outcome.
In the third set, Serena was limping quite bit, and I have no clue what that was about. I'm sure we'll learn more about it soon.
Despite Venus's problems, I really enjoyed this match. Some of the rallies were just wonderful, as Williams sisters rallies tend to be.
Serena will play Victoria Azarenka in the final Saturday. Azarenka has some unfinished business with Serena, so this could be interesting. Provided, that is, that Azarenka doesn't get lost again like she did today against Kuznetsova.
