When the score was 1-1 in her first Medibank International match, Marion Bartoli retired with a left calf muscle strain, giving Melanie South the match. Meanwhile, Vera Zvonareva withdrew because of intestinal illness, and Azarenka withdrew because of a virus.
Ana Ivanovic has also complained of intestinal illness recently. Jelena Jankovic is ill, too, but I do not know the exact nature of her illness.
